Homeland: the hanged key 2003

Sheets of tin, talitan, acrylic on wood

90cm x 120cm

This work represents a segment of a wall from a refugee camp; the wall surface is covered with pieces of tin - within hangs a treasured key. The key is a promise of a homecoming.I am tapping into the Australian expression – “home is where you hang your hat.”I want the viewer to feel what it is like to live in a refugee camp day-after-day. Here in Australia, most people judge the Arab-Israeli conflict from news footage….a snapshot on the television….usually Palestinian children throwing stones at an Israeli tank.
